Living National Treasure Keisuke Serizawa Art Book Exhibition from the Munehiro Collection Serizawa Keisuke (1895-1984), a Living National Art Treasure and master of Kataezome, or hand-stenciled dyeing, was born as the son of a draper in Shizuoka City. He graduated from the Tokyo Higher Technical School (presently Tokyo Institute of Technology) and, after becoming acquainted with Yanagi Muneyoshi, the pioneer of the Mingei (Japanese folk art) Movement, he became a leading figure in the movement alongside Hamada Shoji and Kawai Kanjiro. Serizawa was celebrated for his hand-stenciled dyeing, which made him an artist representing Japan. Serizawa’s creative talents extended beyond Kataezome dyeing on cloth, encompassing books, interior design, and furniture. His distinctive and unconventional designs and color palettes captured the hearts of viewers. In his thirties, he drew inspiration from the characteristic “Bingata” dyeing technique from Okinawa, which heavily influenced his original patterns. In 1956, he was recognized as a holder of Important Intangible Cultural Property (Living National Treasure), and his international esteem soared, resulting in exhibitions at prestigious venues such as the Galeries Nationales du Grand Palais in Paris and a successful exhibition in New York. This exhibition proudly showcases a diverse selection of Serizawa’s works from the Munehiro Yosuke collection, who is also known for his creation of Gujo Tsumugi, or hand-woven fabric. The aim is to present the comprehensive collection gathered by an artist deeply devoted to his craft. The collection includes folding screens, noren curtains, and kimonos dyed in the Kataezome method, showcasing a variety of colors and textures. Furthermore, it features sketches, original paintings on boards and glass, allowing us to feel the power of Serizawa’s artistic spirit.
